Springtime hiker safety

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. If you're getting ready to get rid of your winter gear and hit the trails, it's important not to forget about taking the proper safety precautions.

Keeping track of your location with a map, GPS, and compass is always a good idea, but sometimes nature likes to throw curve balls our way.

"If you do find yourself being lost, best thing to do is not panic. if you panic you start making poor decisions. is not panic and evaluate the circumstances that you're in," says Chris Joyner of the BLM.

If you are completely unsure of your location, it's best to stay put until help arrives.

It's also a good idea to bring lots of water and salty snack with you on the trails and let others know when and where you plan on hiking.
