Regional Blood Center in need of donations

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Those who supply hospital patients with blood say they're in need of donations to continue saving lives.

January is a tough month for blood banks as people are sick or not willing to drive to donate in the cold and snowy weather, said Jill Breman, of the Regional Blood Center.

The center is encouraging people to celebrate National Blood Donor Month by giving blood, platelets or plasma for the first time or the hundredth time.

"My grandma had cancer, so I started giving blood and I keep it going to give platelets to help out cancer patients," said Kevin Vig, who donates platelets monthly.

It takes the Regional Blood Center 15,000 pints to keep 10 area hospitals supplied with blood all year.

Only 5% of the population donates blood even though most people are eligible, Breman said.
