Prospective Kindergartners getting cut-off

By  |

MESA COUNTY, Colo. The District 51 Board of Education made a recent change that is causing outrage among parents of young children.

The board decided for the 2014-2015 school year, the cut off date for children going into kindergarten would be moved from September to July.

The change has many parents of students who will no longer be able to start kindergarten this year up in arms.

But the board maintains they made the correct decision.

"It may not seem like much," says Board of Education President, Greg Mikolai. "But that month and a half or two months can make a great difference in the developmental ability of the students."

To bypass the cut-off, parents can have their children take a gifted and talented test.

But many parents feel that's unfair, and are pushing the board to reconsider.

They suggest the prospective students take kindergarten readiness exams instead.
