Problems plague old 'Far East' building

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. The building that some may remember as the Far East Chinese Restaurant is causing problems for the city and neighboring businesses.

"It's kind of an eye sore on North Ave. that they're trying to turn into a boulevard," said Travis Trimble, who works at Pete's House of Spirits next door. "It would be nice to get rid of."

A few inches of water sit stagnant in the outside basement of the 1530 North Ave. building.

Debris, trash and dirt were floating in the muck Wednesday.

There's also residue left on the walls where the water level may have been at one point.

These problems aren't new and a pipe next to the sidewalk is usually leaking water, Trimble said.

"It's really bad," he said. "It's been going on I don't know how long, probably two years, that I've seen it just dumping water out."

The building's owner, Eric Lederer, has been issued three citations from the city for illicit drainage, or pumping water from the building onto the street.

Two citations were issued back in October 2013 when the building was being used as a haunted house. The final citation was given in December.

Lederer pled not guilty to the charges in the citations.

He's scheduled to appear in court at the end of March to sort out the issue.

Lederer did not return phone calls on Wednesday about the citations.
