Nisley Elementary is being recognized for excellence

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) 80% of the children at Nisley Elementary School are in the free or reduced lunch program but despite facing economic struggles, the school has battled its way to the top.

For the last several years, those same disadvantaged students have continued to improve their TCAP scores and on Tuesday, they were recognized for their success.

"The National Distinguished Title 1 School Award came from the Colorado Department of Education," says Nisley principal, Curry Newton. "There are two schools that will represent Colorado, we'll be 2 of 100 schools recognized across the nation."

Over the last 5 years, Nisley's staff has started to focus in on specific skills that each student needs to improve on; then the students partake in interventions, where their progress is monitored and individual attention can be given.

At an assembly Tuesday morning, the Colorado Department of Education presented the school with a check for $5,000 as a reward for their efforts.
