Keep your dogs out of the heat

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. If your dog is outside Mesa County Animal Services suggests giving your pet fresh, cool water and keep them in a shelter that's in the shade and protected from extreme heat.

It's not even summer yet and officials are already hearing about pet owners acting irresponsibly.

Law enforcement could cite you for animal cruelty charges which could range from a fine, to having your pet taken away to even jail time.

Officials said pets that are older or overweight are morning likely to overheat.

If you plan on exercising outside with your dog avoid peak heat hours in the afternoon as cement can also be harmful to paws.
