D51 to decide on earlier kindergarten entrance date

MESA COUNTY, Colo. What age is a kindergartner ready to be a kindergartner? That is a question the District 51 School Board is reviewing.

Tuesday night, information and data was presented to the board at their work session, regarding whether or not the current kindergarten entrance age is appropriate or should be changed.

The Executive Director of Elementary School, Lesley Rose, walked the board through their current policy and explained why an earlier entrance date is recommended.

"We looked at attendance and we looked at preschool rates, we did talk to some parents, so there's been a lot of research done," said Rose.

Presently, if a child is 5-years-old on or before September 15th, they can enter kindergarten, but the Elementary Office is recommending a change for the cut off date to July 15th, effective in the 2015-2016 school year.

Ultimately, it is up to the School Board to decide if they change the date and when they implement it. They will review this decision at the business meeting later in the month. No decision was made at Tuesday's School Board Work Session.
