Community comes together for family who lost mother

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Friends and generous strangers are teaming up to support children who lost their mother this week.

"We've been overwhelmed," said Andrea Hollandsworth, a friend of Christina Powers, who died this week. "I've never seen a community pull together. Complete strangers are contacting us and calling us."

Doctors were able to save Christina Powers' premature baby boy, but shortly after, she lost her own battle with pneumonia leaving her newborn son and 2-year-old daughter without a mother and their father without a partner.

"She loved her daughter more than anything," Hollandsworth said. "She'd always want to talk about her daughter. Her daughter and her were so close."

Hollandsworth and other employees at Olive Garden, where Christina worked as a server, are collecting a variety of items to donate to the family.

"We’ll pick it up, we’ll meet you somewhere," she said. "We’ll do whatever we can to be able to help this family."

People can drop off donations to Andrea Hollandsworth's (970-261-2395) black SUV or Kaycee Cozad's (970-424-7505) silver car at Grand Junction Olive Garden's parking lot 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. weekdays.

Julie Baker, who did not know Christina or her family, also decided to step up after hearing the family's story.

"My heart strings were pulled and I decided I don't want to just pray about it, I don't want to just do nice things or think nice things, I wanted to do something," Baker said.

Baker will be collecting baby items, frozen dinners and anything else the family might need at Living Stone Church at the following times:
Thursday, Feb. 6, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Monday, Feb. 10, through Thursday Feb. 13, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Sunday Feb. 16
Thursday, Feb. 20, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

These items are needed:

-Girl clothes: size 3T and up
-Frozen dinners
-Men's size XL shirts, size medium boxers, size 34x29 pants
