GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. The sixteen days of the government shutdown cost one local non-profit a large sum of money this year.
The Colorado National Monument Association says it lost $18,000 during the government shutdown. To help make up the shortfall in revenue experienced due to the shutdown earlier this year they're hoping for more members.
During their annual holiday open house they're also hosting a membership drive. Right now the association has 400 members, but they are looking to add 100 new members by the end of this year. The fees go to help the association support activities and projects on Colorado National Monument.
"We are being called upon as an association to do more then we have ever done in the past. Cutbacks in the government budget that are on going mean that membership and revenues in the bookstore are more important than ever before," says Linda Spinner, with the Colorado National Monument Association.
It’s a concern the group has because it takes a lot for the monument to be open year-round.
“Not only do we fund seasonal rangers and seasonal staff to staff the monument visitors center we also fund scientific projects that occur on the monument," says Spinner.
