IDAHO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) -- Crews have completed the expansion of the eastbound bore of the Twin Tunnels on Interstate 70 just east of Idaho Springs.
Clear Creek County Commissioner Tim Mauck said during a ceremony Saturday the expansion from two to three lanes will "breathe life into the future development of I-70."
Even though the eastbound bore is finished, the detours need to be moved. The tunnel will be opened to cars Friday.
KUSA-TV reports the state is looking at expanding the westbound bore of the Twin Tunnels to three lanes as well, but state leaders say some hurdles need to be cleared before that project can begin.
The Colorado Department of Transportation says improving the Twin Tunnels is the first of several projects designed to improve safety and mobility along the interstate.
