New CareFlight helicopter takes life saving to higher level

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. CareFlight serves 150 miles around Grand Junction and it's making that trip even more efficient for both St. Mary's and the patients needing care.

"We take the responsibility of being part of a regional medical center very seriously and we want to do everything we can to make sure people have high quality, affordable care close to home," St. Mary's President and CEO Mike McBride said.

St. Mary's replaced its helicopter with a newer, updated version.

Among the improvements is fuel efficiency. The old helicopter needed 100 gallons of diesel fuel each hour, while the new one only needs 43 gallons an hour.

The new helicopter is also faster, more agile and has up-to-date medical equipment to get people life-saving care as quickly as possible.

"With this, not only does it get you to a hospital quick, but with our staff and what the helicopter brings, it's effectively an ICU bed," McBride said.
