GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Grand Valley youth are prepped and ready for school thanks to a little help from the Mesa County Salvation Army.
Nearly 800 middle and high school students received backpacks filled with all the back to school essentials at Friday's backpack giveaway.
The fun didn't stop there...volunteers and staff of the organization also invited students and their families to a breakfast with live music to get everyone excited about the quickly approaching academic year.
“As they give us feedback on how important it is to them, that's what's important, those families and meeting the needs of the people,” say Major Dan Wilson of the Mesa County Salvation Army.
The giveaway caters to low-income families from all over the Grand Valley every year and to be eligible for a backpack all you have to do is sign up with the Salvation Army prior to the event.
When the program first began, the Salvation Army was distributing 50 backpacks every year.
It continues to grow and reach more children because of community support.
