Growing a community with a garden

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Community members and faith leaders come together for the annual blessing of a special downtown garden project.

The "No Fences" garden was started over five years ago in conjunction with the St. Benedict and St. Martin Place supportive housing complexes.

Located off of White Avenue and Second Street, the garden plot allows residents of the housing communities to grow produce as they work towards rebuilding their lives.

"It allows them to get out in the dirt and actually create something, in addition it allows them to have a product that they can share,” says Beverly Lampley of the Grand Valley Catholic Outreach.

Produce grown in the gardens is typically donated to the catholic outreach soup kitchen to give residents of both housing complexes a way to give back to the community.

Father Edmundo Valera of St. Joseph Catholic Church conducted the blessing and later residents enjoyed a fun-filled barbeque to celebrate another successful year of planting.
