CMU honored for green efforts

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Colorado Mesa University celebrated Arbor Day with a new award to its name.

The school was granted the title of Tree Campus USA based on an application students and Colorado State Forest Service staff put together last year.

The application had to meet specific criteria, which included an Arbor Day activity.

Students planted three trees between the Fine Arts building and Dominguez Hall Friday morning.

"Trees are such an integral part of everything in the world and they clean our air, they provide us with the oxygen and they take in CO2." said Sheila Cloud, a CMU student and member of the Sustainability Council.

If you plan to plant your own tree for Arbor Day this year, experts advise not to dig the hole too deep. The top of the roots should be at the top of the hole so the soil doesn't suffocate them.
