Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone was born on July 6, 1946 in New York. Sly’s father, Frank Stallone, is from Italy, and his mother, Jackie Stallone, is of Ukrainian descent. One of Stallone’s nicknames is the “Italian Stallion.”
Stallone attended the American College of Switzerland of the University of Miami, where he earned a B.A. degree.
Stallone’s biggest break came with “Rocky” in 1976. A screenwriter as well as an actor, Stallone wrote the film, which was inspired by a fight between Muhammad Ali and Chuck Wepner. “Rocky” won the Oscar for Best Picture, and ignited one of the most successful franchises in movie history.
After the first “Rocky” film, Stallone then starred in “F.I.S.T.” in 1978.
He returned to the ring for “Rocky II” in 1979.
Stallone then co-starred with Mr. T in “Rocky III” in 1982.
Stallone then took a break from playing a boxer to instead turn his attention to another successful franchise when he starred as Green Beret John Rambo in “First Blood” in 1982.
The sequel “Rambo: First Blood Part II” in 1985. He went on to make another two “Rambo” films, the most recent that came out in 2008.
After the success of “Rambo,” Stallone returned to the ring as Rocky Balboa in “Rocky IV” in 1985. This time Rocky took on a Soviet fighter played by Dolph Lundgren.
In 1990, Rocky hit theaters again with “Rocky V,” which featured Balboa mentoring Tommy “Machine” Gunn, who was played by real-life fighter Tommy Morrison.
Stallone tried his hand at other roles. He played in the comedies “Oscar” and “Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot” and played in “Judge Dredd” in 1995, which was based off of a comic book.
Stallone tried to take on a more dramatic role in “Cop Land” in 1997.
In 2001, Stallone played a race-car driver in “Driven.”
In 2006, Stallone starred in the final installment of the Rocky franchise, “Rocky Balboa.”
In 2010, Stallone joined an all-star cast of action-film stars in “The Expendables.” He returned for the sequel, “The Expendables 2,” in 2012.
Stallone married his third wife, Jennifer Flavin, in 1997.
Stallone and Flavin have three daughters together. Stallone had two children from his previous marriages.
His son Sage, who starred with him in “Rocky V,” died July 13, 2012, at the age of 36.
