Kidman started out starring in a number of small Australian films and TV shows, including 1983's "BMX Bandits" and ...

However, it was the 1989 thriller "Dead Calm," co-starring Sam Neill and Billy Zane, that gave her her breakthrough.
Kidman made her Hollywood debut by starring alongside then-boyfriend Tom Cruise in the 1990 auto racing film "Days of Thunder," playing a young doctor who falls in love with a NASCAR driver.
She and Cruise re-teamed for Ron Howard's period drama "Far and Away" in 1990.

The year 1995 was a big one for Kidman, who first appeared in Gus Van Sant's critically acclaimed "To Die For," playing murderous newscaster Suzanne Stone Maretto.
That summer saw her star in "Batman Forever" opposite Val Kilmer in what has proven to be the highest-grossing film of her career to this point.

In 1999, Kidman and Cruised teamed up for their third and final movie together, Stanley Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut."
The film, which would end up being Kubrick's last, was subject to censorship controversies due to the explicit nature of its sex scenes.
Kidman and Cruise separated in May 1998, before "Eyes Wide Shut" was even released. Their divorce was made official in 2001.
