Montrose hosts Special Olympics game

MONTROSE, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- Every year during the high school basketball season the Montrose area Special Olympic basketball team plays in a game to prepare them for the area and state games.

This year the game took place on Friday night in Montrose between Central and the Indians. It is the 5th year that the game has been held as the Special Olympic athletes took on members of the student council and Spanish Mexican American club coming together for a school-wide event.

The Special Olympic athletes are gearing up for the Grand Junction area basketball tournament that will be held at Colorado Mesa University on Feb. 17. The team will then head to the State tournament in Denver on Mar. 23 and 24.

"It is such a wonderful atmosphere in our school. We are developing with all these different organizations that in fact everyone is equal. Our kids feel like they belong here," said Special Olympics coordinator Carolyn Rettig.
