HS Football: Learning to win the close games

In the team's three games have been decided by a combined seven points.

The team earned a five-point win against Rifle in between two one-point losses to Fruita Monument and Palisade.

The Indians had a 21 point lead at the half against the Bulldogs before giving up the game in the second half.

"When we played Rifle that's how we focused back up," Caleb Egbert says. "We were able to get a couple drives down. Last week we weren't able to do that. Hopefully this week it won't come down to the wire like it has the past three games and we'll be able to play all four quarters."

Brett Mertens' club is 1-2 but could very well be 3-0.

"We trailed late and had to get a score," Mertens says. "Against Rilfe we were able to do it. We completed a couple big passes. In the other two we weren't able to get it done. There's nothing different in the situation with the kids. It's just the execution at the end of the game. Sometimes you get it done, sometimes you don't."
