Coming into this season the Grand Junction girls’ basketball team had just one senior on their roster. Head Coach Sam Provenza knew others would have to step up and junior Mackenzie Younker has done just that.
She is this week’s athlete of the week.
As a sophomore MacKenzie Younker was an all-league player for the Grand Junction Tigers. Now as a junior the team will work through her more now than ever.
“She is a returning all-conference first team player, so we got to really depend on her. She understands that. She’s ready to take that lead and I think what you will see is the kids are going to move with her and grow with her too,” said head coach Sam Provenza.
The leader she is today wouldn't have been possible without all of her teammates over the years.
"It was so helpful just having the players that we had last year. They were just such great leaders and it was cool to be able to just see them and watch them last year while seeing what I wanted to do this year,” said Younker.
Younker still has two years of high school ball left, but she knows what her ultimate goal is.
“I definitely want to play college basketball .I love the sport so much. I like sit in class just getting excited for games and practice,” said Younker.
And those around her know that she can do anything that she sets her mind too.
“The sky is the limit for Kenzie. She’s got size and strength. Those leadership abilities like I said will take her a long way at whatever level she wants to go too,” said Provenza.
Mackenzie and the Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday taking on Eagle Valley.
