GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- The race was on for mothers in labor on New Year's Eve as they tried to have the first baby of 2018.
"They told us that there was another person that was here," said Jaime Brown, a new mother.
At midnight, Brown was in the delivery room.
"Just getting down to the twelve o'clock point, was like oh my goodness it's almost here, it's almost here, it's almost here," said Brown.
Forty-two minutes later her baby Samuel entered the world.
"Right after we had him I guess these nurses talked to the nurses at the other hospital and they said that they hadn't had one there either and so he was the first one born in the valley," said Brown.
She says the competition was a nice distraction to the pain.
"It was fun having something else to count down as well as having a birth to count down to," said Brown.
Despite the battle, Dad held himself together.
"I didn't find pregnancy too difficult," said Anthony Krunglevich, a new father. "I was kind of strapped on along for the ride."
But overall, a memorable start to 2018 for both Mom and Dad.
"This was an awesome New Years, I would never want to spend it another way," Krunglevich said.
