District 51 uses mill levy override money to add days to 2018-2019 calendar

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- School District 51 said on Tuesday night it adopted its 2018-2019 school calendar which adds five days to the year, thanks to money from the mill levy override voters approved in November.

The district said two days had already been added to the calendar for the current year. The school board and teacher's association agreed the district would continue with the two days add three more days to the 2018-2019 calendar if the funding became available.

Most of the student-only days off have been moved to Mondays, the district said, so that they coincide with holidays. Students have off on these days for teacher planning days, work days and in-service days.

The district said it added an added an additional teacher in-service day in October.

The school year begins on Aug. 15, 2018, and will end on May 30, 2019.

School leaders decided not make any other major changes because of the time between the passage of the mill levy and when the calendar was adopted. They plan on having a survey and focus groups to help improve the calendar for years to come.
