GARFIELD COUNTY, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- UPDATE: The coroner's office has identified the body as a 29-year-old man from Rifle, Colorado.

The Garfield County Coroner was able to positively identify Joshua Gomez as the man found on an island in the Colorado River. The coroner's office said in a press release the cause and manner of death won't be determined until toxicology and microscopic examinations are completed.

No injuries or trauma were found during the autopsy.

According to the press release, Gomez was last seen at a bus stop in New Castle around May 25, and investigators are asking if anyone has information about where he was before his death, call 970-655-6335.

Original story: A body was found on an island in the Colorado River west of Parachute on Saturday. According to a press release, The Garfield County Coroner’s office was dispatched to an island to recover the remains.

The remains were in a state of decomposition which made identifying the body more complicated. The coroner’s office was able to make a presumptive ID based on the tattoos on the body and the clothing. No ID will be released though until more characteristics are determined. This is expected to happen when an autopsy is done. That’s expected to be scheduled early this week. Next of kin has been notified based on the presumptive ID made on the body.

There is no known cause of death at this time, but according to the release, that should be found out during the autopsy as well.
