GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT)-- As summer comes to an end, kids and parents are preparing for the first day of school. For some, affording school supplies isn’t always easy.
The annual “Stuff the Bus” event this weekend focused on helping some of the families in need.
A yellow school bus was parked inside Mesa Mall, the event organizers hoped to fill it with donated school supplies.
“I love kids, and I love that our community helps all the children here— it’s just great,” said Bus Driver Helen Morris. Morris’ bus was the one that was “stuffed” with school supplies.
While kids waited to get their supplies, they were able to explore various booths with information on events they can participate in throughout the school year.
District 51’s Lunch Lizard was also on site giving away free tacos to anyone who donated supplies to Stuff the Bus.
Mesa Mall also participated by giving away school supplies at the Back to School Bash inside of the Mesa Mall.
"We started out with a bang, offering 200 backpacks to the first kids who came through, and we plowed through those," said Mesa Mall spokesperson Tamara Krizman. “The backpacks were filled with some school supplies to help parents and families out.”
Stuff the Bus will have a few more events before school kicks off. On August 6th and 7th the bus will be outside of the Rimrock Walmart, and on August 8th the bus will be at the Townsquare Media Studios.
