GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- Residents on Orchard Mesa are taking action in response to the recent increase in car thefts. They're forming their own neighborhood watch.
Neighbors said they're tired of all the crime in the area and want to do their part to try and prevent it.
"Getting to know all your neighbors and cross lying streets in order to create that awareness and talk to people," said Cody Roark, who is one of the organizers for the group.
Other neighbors like the sound of it.
"It would put a lot of minds at ease around the neighborhood," said Rachel Morris, who lives off Zuni Drive.
The Grand Junction Police Department said crimes including car thefts have been on the rise around Unaweep avenue.
"I learned real quick, lock everything and make sure everything is inside and keep an eye out for suspicious activity," said Morris.
While neighbors want to act fast and reduce crime, they don't want to take the law into their own hands.
"We want to avoid that lone vigilante kind of acts amongst community members," said Roark. "A lot of houses are developing security cameras and with social media it allows us to spread the word fast."
Then they can pass that information onto police.
"They're [GJPD] in touch with us and guide us on what we can do legally," said Roark.
Neighbors said another issue in the neighborhood is a group of juveniles driving around and screaming "white power."
"It's scary, that's very inappropriate. So police presence is welcome to put everyone at ease, that's just scary," said Morris.
And so interacting and knowing one another can make everyone feel like they're safe under their own roof.
"It allows us to be aware of potentially protect family members and loved ones as well," said Roark.
One thing that Orchard Mesa residents can use to stay up to date on what's going on in their neighborhood is social media. There's a Facebook page where people post what they see and what's going on.
That page's name is Orchard Mesa Neighborhood Watch, and while this page is valuable Roark said they want to start meeting face to face.
They plan on starting the meetings next month and are still working on where they will meet.
