An oil and gas worker is in critical condition at St. Mary's Hospital after a tractor trailer rolled over the victim's head and chest Monday.
According to the Rio Blanco County Sheriff's Office, the victim was working at a gas pipeline construction site approximately 45 miles southwest of Meeker in the Piceance Creek Basin.
Rio Blanco Sheriff's Deputies responded along with Fire and Rescue units from the Meeker Fire Department. Saint Mary's Air Life helicopter was also immediately dispatched given the rural location and the reported extent of the victim's injuries.
The victim, 43 year old Bonnie Stevens from Iowa City, Iowa, was operating a pilot car for a 127 foot semi trailer that brought in a large piece of construction equipment used to bend large pipe. The operator of the semi tractor had released the air brakes on the trailer without setting the brakes on the tractor.
The trailer had several sets of dual tires over the 127 feet. The victim was standing between two of those sets of tires when the trailer started to roll. The victim tried to get out of the way and fell in the path of the tires. One set of the dual tires struck the victim in the head, chest, and right arm and shoulder area.
The victim was airlifted to Saint Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction in critical condition.
The trucking company was East Coast Specialized Hauling based in Portsmouth, Virginia. The driver of the semi, Ronald Tolson, 64, of Lenoir City, Tennessee, was charged with Unattended Motor Vehicle.
