GRAND JUNCTION (KJCT) - It's no secret, there is a shortage of doctors in Colorado. It may be affecting us more than we know, right here on the Western Slope.
Today, the University of Colorado's Denver school of medicine addressed the growing physician shortage with their Grand Junction clinical branch.
Doctors were in such short supply nationally in 2006 the association of medical colleges asked its members to increase enrollment by 30% over five years.
To aid the shortage, officials at the new uc denver school of medicine campus in Grand Junction hope the branch will become home for 24 medical students, some students in their 3rd and 4th years of training.
President of the University of Colorado school of medicine Richard Krugman says,"We believe that the more students that experience clinical medicine training in Western Colorado, the more likely they will be to settle here."
Because of this, the university is hoping more immediate care will be available as Grand Junction continues to grow.
