GRAND JUNCTION (KJCT)- A national award is showing Colorado's justice system is keeping the streets safe. The National Information Exchange Model,or NIEM, awards 5 programs each year.
The awards are based on the use of technology to link government agencies.
The Colorado Integrated Criminal Justice Information System links five agencies throughout the state; including the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Corrections.
A CBI official says it's an important part when it comes to apprehending wanted criminals. Without it many of them would still be wondering the streets.
"It cuts down on man hours aNd time and probably makes info available that you may not otherwise even know exists... that's a good thing for the citizens because we're going to put bad guys in jail and make a better quality of life for everybody in Colorado," says David Linnertz, the division director of Colorado Bureau of Investigation in Grand Junction.
Colorado's integrated justice system handles more than 6 million transactions a year.
The NIEM does say the system is limited because it only spans across 5 government agencies. And the computer network's security is lacking.
