Teachers union opposing state education cuts

DENVER (AP) - A Colorado teachers' union is working to prevent budget cuts to public schools and says a lawsuit is a possibility.

The Colorado Education Association has launched a campaign to support the state constitutional provision that protects education funding. Voter-approved Amendment 23 boosts the amount schools get by inflation plus 1 percent every year through 2011 and by the rate of inflation in future years.

Gov. Bill Ritter is asking schools to give up $110 million in funding that the legislature froze last session to help cover an expected $1 billion budget shortfall next year. He also wants to cut an additional $150 million in next year's budget by increasing a portion of education funding, not the whole amount. The governor says that doesn't violate Amendment 23.
