PINE PLANES, New York (KJCT) -- A suspected gunman has surrendered, according to government officials.

An alleged gunman at an upstate New York high school had taken the principal hostage, said the town supervisor.

Pine Plains Town Supervisor, Gregg Pulver, describes the gunman as in his mid 40s and told CNN that students at Stissing Mountain High School are safe. No shots were reportedly fired.

Government officials say the man is a former student.

The school is about 90 miles north of New York City.
