There are an estimated 1,500 homeless kids in Colorado. Eighty-seven of them live in Montrose County.
Montrose County Commissioners and child advocates are trying to do more to help runaways and homeless kids. Right now, there is not a shelter in the Montrose area to help homeless youth. Community leaders hope by bringing attention to the problem and highlighting the services the community does have, more citizens will be willing to join the cause.
The Montrose Youth Leadership Team was created in August to offer support to homeless kids and raise awareness about the problem. Many of the children on the leadership team have faced homelessness and can relate to those in need in the community.
Monday afternoon, members of the Montrose Youth Leadership Team joined others from the community to kick off a campaign to fight homelessness.
Commissioners also proclaimed November as Homeless and Runaway Youth Awareness Month. After the rally, leaders handed out green light bulbs. They are asking folks to use them on their porches to show that they support the cause.
