Families and firefighters from across the United States gathered on Sunday to honor 122 firefighters who died in 2008 and 19 firefighters who lost their lives in past years.
The 28th Annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service was held at the National Fire Academy in Maryland. Firefighter's names were added to a white stone monument at the national emergency training center.
Four Colorado firefighters were remembered at the service: Captain Shane Stewart, Chief Terry DeVore, firefighter John Schwartz-Junior and pilot Gert Marais all died at various emergency calls in 2008.
Governor Ritter ordered all U.S. and Colorado flags lowered to half-staff in observance of these brave men and women.
