We're learning more about an incident in Rio Blanco County last night, that ended with the self-inflicted shooting death of a suspect.
Investigators say at 5:07 pm Wednesday, a Colorado State Patrol Trooper stopped a vehicle at the Intersection of State Highway 13 and Rio Blanco County Road 5 (Piceance Creek Road), 23 miles south of Meeker. The driver was wanted on warrants out of Rio Blanco County for Domestic Violence, Assault and Driving While under Restraint as a Habitual Offender and was out on bond for an earlier Felony D.U.I. charge.
Troopers say, within the first minute of the contact, the driver, while still sitting in his vehicle, shot himself once in the chest with a short barreled shotgun. The Trooper and two Rio Blanco County Sheriff's Deputies immediately began performing C.P.R. until an ambulance from the Meeker Fire/Rescue Department arrived.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:47pm. He's been identified as 56 year old Robert Harold Rawson, of Meeker.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation out of Grand Junction is assisting the Sheriff's Office with the investigation. An autopsy is scheduled for today in Grand Junction.
