
A piece of legislation is before the U.S. House that could drive up your electricity bill by 47 percent.
The proposed bill would put a cap on carbon dioxide emissions output for all electricity companies.
As part of a national effort alerting rate-payers, Grand Valley Power is sending a letter to their customers.
GVP representative Derek Elder says they know their customers are hurting in this economic climate, and urges them to speak up.
"We realize right now with the way the economic times are that our customers are having a hard time as it is," Elder said. "And that's why we're trying to get the word out, so if they're concerned about this they can contact their elected officials."
Elder says his company is not against regulating greenhouse gas emissions.
We spoke with Xcel, and it thinks it's in pretty good shape to take on these possible regulations. They do anticipate their rates going up, as well.
