Obama and Biden will take their oaths again on Monday during the ceremonial swearing in. But since the Constitution mandates the president take the oath before noon on Jan. 20, they stuck with tradition when the 20th falls on a Sunday and took the oath during small, private ceremonies so the large, public events could be held Monday.
Sunday was the third time Chief Justice John Roberts has administered the oath to Obama. After they both flubbed the words during the public ceremony in 2009, they redid the oath a few days later so there would be no question Obama was president. This time, the oath went off without a hitch, and Obama quickly turned to his family and exclaimed, "I did it!"
