In 1971, Kerry became the first Vietnam veteran to appear before Congress, testifying before the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs for more than two hours. In part, Kerry told lawmakers he felt the United States war policy in Vietnam was the cause of "war crimes."
After serving as lieutenant governor in Massachusetts under Michael Dukakis, Kerry defeated Republican Ray Shamie to become a U.S. senator in 1984. He's served the state of Massachusetts in that role ever since.
Kerry defeated several others in the 2004 Democratic Presidential primaries, later selecting John Edwards to be his running mate for the election. The announcement was made on July 6, 2004.
